
 
On Monday, March 6, 2006 Charlotte officially became the "Hollywood of NASCAR" - as the city chosen for the NASCAR Hall of Fame over finalists Daytona Beach and Atlanta. "Racing Was Built Here, Racing Belongs Here", Charlotte's bidding campaign slogan, rang loud and true.
Why was Charlotte chosen for the NASCAR Hall of Fame?
Charlotte was picked as home to the Hall of Fame for three important reasons:
1. First, Charlotte's proposal best achieves NASCAR's overriding goal to have their premier Hall of Fame in the world of sports and entertainment.
2. Second, the region's rich racing history and the presence of so many NASCAR drivers and team headquarters makes for a compelling fan experience.
3. Third, the emotional and financial commitment made by the city of Charlotte to ensure long-term success of the Hall of Fame was the best fit for NASCAR, the industry and the fan base.
Where will the NASCAR Hall of Fame be located?
It will be located in center city Charlotte, North Carolina on the entire block bounded by 2nd Street, Caldwell Street,Brevard and Stonewall Street. See MAP of Hall of Fame location. The Hall of Fame is expected to open in Fall of 2009 and no later than March 31, 2010 - by contract with NASCAR.
Is NASCAR moving offices and jobs to Charlotte?
NASCAR intends to move its area offices to Uptown if they exercise an option to add an office building to the Hall of Fame. Other NASCAR partners may also consider space in this office building. NASCAR partners such as NASCAR Images & SPEED Channel will be involved with functions at the Hall.
The NASCAR industry currently has a $5.9 billion economic impact on the state of NC with 77%, or $4.55 billion coming into the Charlotte area with a 7% predicted annual growth rate.
What will be featured in the NASCAR Hall of Fame?
The NASCAR Hall of Fame will honor the drivers, crew members and team owners who have impacted the sport for the past 60+ years, as well as the present day. The building will include exhibit space, a Hall of Honor, a state-of-the-art media center, interactive entertainment, restaurants and retail.
NASCAR's major contributions are the grant of a license to use its logos and trademarks, their ability to promote promote the NASCAR Hall of Fame through its various media sources, and they will also provide invaluable archive material, including video, historic photographs and memorabilia.
How is the $150.5 million project being funded ?
- $102.5 million from hotel / motel tax.
- $20 million worth of land contributed by the state of North Carolina.
- $15 million from corporate sponsorships.
- $13 million from an existing Convention Center fund.
- There are no property taxes or other general fund revenues in the deal.
