Home Renovations That All Sellers Should Consider

With four hit HGTV shows, a bestselling book and years of success in real estate and renovations, Property Brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott talked to Real Simple about what home renovations sellers should consider when putting their home on the market.

It is no secret that once you prepare to list your home, the first things on the to-do list are some face-lifts around the house. Here are some big ticket areas that the Property Brothers are warning sellers about.

Kitchen and Bathroom Renovations – While the brothers suggest putting a few more dollars into large rooms like the kitchen and bathroom, if you leave the rest of the house dated then potential buyers might notice the difference. “If you’re selling your home, people aren’t going to be blown away by just a kitchen and ignore everything else,” said Jonathan. Doing a mild makeover on the whole house can keep the home looking fresh and by putting slightly more focus on the kitchen or bathrooms, potential buyers will be impressed.

Smart Home Technology – Smart home technology is becoming more and more popular in today’s listings. The technology itself keeps getting better and more efficient and they really look great, according to Drew.  So it might be beneficial in the long run to invest in things like smart thermostats and energy-saving appliances.

Flooring – If you’re bringing different rooms together, the same flooring can completely transform the look of the space, according to Jonathan. He also suggests using a sturdier product, like vinyl that looks like hardwood or plain style porcelain, than hardwood floors if you have a lot of traffic, kids, dogs, etc.
