The holiday season is approaching which means 2021 is right around the corner. While you get your home ready for hosting, cooking, and wrapping, it’s a great time to start thinking about what interior design trends will be popular next year. The following predictions are part of what you can expect to see in the home design space in 2021.
The Color Report
After a year of uncertainty, many paint companies are opting for colors in 2021 that reflect calmness and stability. Instead of one color of the year, Behr has released a full palette of colors that they predict will be most used in the upcoming year. To see the full list of Behr’s expected paint colors and how to use them in your own home, check out our previous blog. Benjamin Moore’s 2021 color palette also reflects a range of colors expected to trend in the new year, including clays, peaches, whites, and grays.
Speaking of colors, Trendbook shares their prediction of a darker blue color becoming more popular in future home design. They’re expecting elements like navy painted walls or dark blue accent chairs to create a deeply elegant and contemporary space. Matching this dark hue with light hardwoods for flooring, walls, and ceilings will be a popular combination of material and color. As long as you establish some balance with natural sunlight or light hardwoods, a navy design won’t leave your home in the dark.
“After all of the craziness that we have experienced in 2020, I believe people gravitate towards warm, rich colors that convey a sense of coziness, comfort, and safety,” says Paloma Contreras, award-winning interior designer. “Think rich chocolate brown, moss green, and deep blues.”
Bring Nature Inside
Sustainable home design continues to be on trend and Trendbook predicts that next year we will see a new wave in developing more sustainable home furniture and fashion. Natural and organic elements will also be used to bring a sense of nature and safety into our homes from the outdoors. Wallsauce expects organic materials and plant-based fibers will be used to strengthen the human-nature connection through the use of things like natural silk upholsteries, hemp curtains and fabrics, raw and untreated wood finishings, and natural stone features.
Veranda Magazine suggests to bring the outdoors into your home with mossy green paints, floral wallpaper, and fresh vases of flowers. Using a combination of organic materials and finishes with nature-inspired decor will help create a grounding space that’s connected with the earth.
Focus on Function
After a year of working from home, more people are looking for elements of function in their living spaces. Whether that is more storage, more office space, or more lounging areas, people are now forced to spend more time at home and they want to be sure they can not only enjoy their time there, but they can get the job done, too. Home office additions and renovations are going to become much more popular in interior design choices next year with more employers choosing to work remote indefinitely.
21 Oak, a home design guide, suggests homeowners look into more cabinets and built-in shelves as a great way to make room for all of your school or office supplies. Consider hanging shelves to create storage for items that you don’t need sitting on your desk. Remember that this space should be functional but enjoyable, so add personal touches like picture frames and other knick knacks to make it your own.
Whether you are looking to sell, renovate, or just refresh in 2021, these design trends will be helpful for any situation. This year we have spent more time than ever in our homes, proving how special and intimate that space can be. Make sure that it’s somewhere you enjoy being. Take advantage of these upcoming design trends to combine functionality, sustainability, and stability to truly make it a safe haven.
