Here’s what you need to know to stay ahead of the curve.
Reflecting on 2024: Timeless or Temporary?
Last year saw bold designs and classic styles make a striking comeback, with fresh, modern twists. One of the most timeless trends? Curved architectural elements. “Arched walkways, windows, and doorways add a softness and elegance that’s hard to beat,” said Laci Owens. These details brought softness and sophistication to homes, making them a favorite among buyers and designers alike. Meanwhile, Debbie Covington noted the rise of warm metallics and textured wallpapers, both of which she hopes will carry over into 2025.
Pattern play also captured attention in 2024. “Layering different patterns and colors can create a timeless look when done right,” shared Mary Clementi. From English Country-inspired kitchens with burnished bronze hardware to full-dip painted rooms, the emphasis was on blending vintage charm with modern touches.
Rachel Mangiapane added that the simplification of homes to make them more efficient was another standout trend of 2024. “This means decluttering and making spaces open versus ‘fussy,’ allowing the architectural details of a home to shine. It’s a timeless approach,” she shared.
What’s In for 2025?
Our agents are seeing a shift toward warm, inviting spaces and functional designs that cater to both aesthetics and everyday living. Here’s what they expect to dominate:
- Natural tones, textures, and earthy palettes: Debbie and Rachel anticipate a continued rise in warm, natural tones and materials like wood and terracotta, combined with earthy neutrals and light, airy whites. These elements create a tranquil, grounded ambiance while enhancing architectural details and millwork, adding depth and character to any room.
- Vintage-inspired chic: According to Mary, investing in antique furniture and secondhand finds will replace big-box retailer staples. “There’s something special about pieces with history,” she noted. These unique additions help create curated, one-of-a-kind spaces that feel authentic.
- Wallpaper and painted ceilings: “Lots and lots of wallpaper,” Mary predicts, paired with contrasting trim and ceiling colors. Bold patterns and textures can instantly transform a room, adding depth and character. Painted ceilings, a growing trend, offer a creative way to bring color into a space without overwhelming it.
- Functional spaces: Laci emphasized the importance of separate work areas to accommodate work-from-home lifestyles. As hybrid work continues, having defined spaces for productivity is increasingly valued by buyers. Rachel also highlighted the growing popularity of multi-purpose spaces, with buyers opting for functional and frequently used areas rather than redundant ones like a breakfast area and a dining room.
- Smart home integration: Debbie sees clean lines and uncluttered spaces complemented by smart technology features. From voice-activated lighting to app-controlled thermostats, these innovations make everyday life more convenient and appealing.
What’s Out in 2025?
Some once-beloved trends are now falling out of favor. Here’s what trends are on the decline:
- Farmhouse style: Anne Dabrowski sees this trend, along with black hardware and gray interiors, continuing to decline. While these elements were popular for years, buyers are now gravitating toward designs that feel fresher and more contemporary.
- Open concept layouts: Both Mary and Debbie agree that buyers are moving away from open floor plans in favor of defined, functional rooms. “People want spaces that serve specific purposes,” Debbie explained.
- All-white kitchens: Laci and Debbie noted that these spaces feel too sterile compared to today’s warmer, more dynamic kitchens. Instead, expect to see kitchens with colorful cabinetry, bold backsplashes, and layered textures.
How Design Trends Influence Buyer Perception
Design trends play a pivotal role in shaping buyers’ perceptions of a home. “It’s easy to fall in love with a beautiful home,” Anne shared. “Buyers equate polished design touches with finished projects, which adds value.” Homes that embrace current trends often attract more interest and stand out in competitive markets.
However, our agents caution against being too trendy. “If you go too unique, it may not appeal to the masses,” Laci advised. Debbie echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of staying “fresh and updated” without overwhelming buyers with overly specific styles.
Striking the right balance ensures a home feels modern and inviting while appealing to a broad audience. Rachel added that while trendy designs can grab attention, maintenance and preparation matter most. “Preparation can be a differentiator between a home somebody would consider living in and a home somebody would pay top dollar to own,” she said.
The Importance of Visual Appeal in a Competitive Market
In today’s market, first impressions matter, and buyers are searching for a move-in-ready home more than ever. “Buyers love homes that incorporate modern trends and unique finishes,” said Mary. These homes attract attention online and during showings, often selling faster and at higher prices. Eye-catching details like statement light fixtures, bold accent walls, or high-end finishes can make a property unforgettable.
For sellers, achieving the right balance between neutral appeal and standout design is key. “Neutral is always best for listing purposes,” Anne advised, “but adding a few trendy touches can make a home feel fresh and inviting.” Simple updates like swapping out outdated hardware, adding stylish throw pillows, or incorporating greenery can make a significant impact.
Beyond aesthetics, functionality is equally important. Buyers are looking for homes that align with their lifestyles, whether that means having a spacious kitchen for entertaining, a dedicated home office, or energy-efficient features. Our agents emphasize that small updates can go a long way in meeting these expectations.
