Throughout our time at home, we have learned new ways to stay busy and entertained. We’ve explored activities that we might not have been accustomed to before, broadening our horizon of creative outlets and entertainment. There are many ways to continue supporting Charlotte-area businesses and get outside to enjoy the beauty summer in the Carolinas while doing so. Here are some ideas for socially distanced summer pastimes in Charlotte:
Board Game Tournament
Gather your family, neighbors, or friends and host a board game tournament at home! Retail shopping is starting to open with some restrictions, allowing you to purchase games to play and support these stores.
Paper Skyscraper
, a Charlotte staple, has unique games and gifts in stock to keep the whole crew entertained. Learn a new game, pick up an old favorite, and remember how much fun you can have in your backyard or at your kitchen table.
Make Your Own Pizza Kits
Pizza is always a popular choice but with take out on the rise more and more people are taking it on as a do-it-yourself project. Local Charlotte favorites like
Hawthorne’s
,
Pasta & Provisions
, and others are sending patrons home with make-your-own pizza kits. The kits come with all you need to get the pizza party started, just add your favorite toppings. Homemade pizza on the patio is a great summertime dinner date with friends and family.
Virtual Museum Tours and Learning at Home
Many museums have turned to virtually hosted exhibit tours, science and history lessons, and other digital learning opportunities. Learn about the
history of Charlotte
, practice
at-home science projects
with the kids, and tour world-renown
art and history exhibits online
to explore some creative avenues while at home.
Take a Virtual Cooking or Cocktail Class
Bring home your favorite restaurant or bar! Many places around Charlotte are offering virtual cooking or bartending classes so that you don’t have to miss your favorite dish or go-to cocktail.
Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen
is offering redesigned
online cooking classes
until further notice.
Dot Dot Dot
is offering take home cocktail kits, charcuterie boards, and gift cards. Their
cocktail kit menu
offers four options for at-home beverages. Enjoy those craft cocktails and tasty new meals alfresco this summer on your patio, porch, or outdoor living space.
Support Local
While social distancing, we can still remain connected with our community. Order takeout or delivery from your typical go-to Saturday night dinner spot or pick up your favorite local beers from the neighborhood brewery. Your favorite breweries, bars, and restaurants are still encouraging ways for you to support them in person or at home. Check out this list of quarantine-approved activities
on Charlotte Agenda
for more inspiration.
Take a Drive
We are lucky to be in such close proximity to the Carolina mountains, making it an easy day or weekend trip. If you need a change of scenery,
the Blue Ridge Parkway
is the best you’ll get. Take a drive up to the Blue Ridge Mountains, only about 2 hours from Charlotte, and experience nature’s beauty. The parkway’s website describes it as “America’s Favorite Drive”. Go see for yourself this summer!
When in Doubt, Get Outside
We have an abundance of outdoor recreational venues around us. Between our three lakes, countless greenways, and local parks, you have the opportunity to get outside and enjoy the summer while staying socially distanced. Grab dinner to-go from your favorite restaurant and opt for a picnic outside at Freedom Park. Dust off your bike, strap on some roller blades, or hop on a skateboard and take a ride on one of the many beautiful streets, trails and greenways around Charlotte. Bring the dogs to a nearby lake access or park and go for a walk. There are many ways to enjoy the Carolina blue skies while staying responsible.
While we navigate this new normal, our summer will look a bit different this year. Health professionals continue to stress the importance of social distancing, so alter your typical summer activities for something more appropriate. Opting for dinner outside, taking long walks on the greenways, and supporting Charlotte local businesses are great and easy ways to enjoy this summer.
