Wallpaper Returns as a Popular Home Design Accent

Although wallpaper made its debut centuries ago, the accent tool is making its way back into the interior design world as a popular medium yet again.

Wallpaper initially entered the home design space as a cost effective substitute to tapestries used by affluent homeowners for decorating, according to REALTOR® Magazine. Now it’s become a popular way to add a pop of texture, color, and pattern to a room. A paint job can do wonders for a space, but sometimes when you want to make more of a splash in the room’s design, wallpaper can provide that pop.

As the design tool cycles back into home trends, there are a few things to keep in mind. Most design professionals agree that wallpaper is best used in moderation. Most often, wallpaper is used as an accent wall in entryways, powder rooms, dining rooms, and master bedrooms.

The most popular wallpaper print seems to be oversized, bold geometrics and florals. These bold looks require some discretion, as you do not want to use too much of such a strong pattern. Kristin Barnett, a Nashville-based designer, warns against using this type of significantly bold pattern behind a television or on a wall that homeowners spend a lot of time directly looking at.

Tobynn Partridge, Helen Adams Realty agent out of the Lake Norman office, has years of experience in interior design prior to her career in real estate. She encourages homeowners to test out wallpaper in smaller spaces before committing to a larger room. Spaces like powder rooms, feature ceilings, and dining rooms are a good place to start with wallpaper designs.

“The biggest concern I see is DIY wallpaper,” explains Partridge. “Unless you buy the temporary peel and stick version it’s best to let a professional install and remove wallpaper. There is proper preparation before installation and correct ways to remove the product so that the drywall wall is not damaged. You don’t want to have seam issues, moisture problems or major wall damage when you take it down.”

The home design world saw a wallpaper comeback in 2018 and it looks like 2019 will be no different. There are things to take into consideration when choosing to decorate with wallpaper, like the size of the room and the application process. When planning the interior design of a space, wallpaper can be a more unique way to add a splash of color, texture, or patterns.
